Finn-Sheep The Sheep that Lambs in Litters The "Dual Purpose" Sheep
|
|
Finn-sheep also knows as the Finnish Landrace is the breed of sheep that is known to lamb in litters. They typically have a much high rate of multiple births, they area a medium fast growing lean sheep with an excellent carcass and their Fiber is sought after by hand spinners. Finns are not a difficult breed to manage, and they can be run under normal field conditions using standard sheep care. Due to the high birth rate and the small size of the lambs at birth, special care and management of the ewe flock is required in late pregnancy. Ewes which have lambed should be separated from those still to lamb and a small paddocks near the lambing shed is an option. The Finn also requires protection, as do many breeds of sheep, so to protect your investment, predator control is crucial. Mature Finnsheep rams will range in weight from 150 to 200 pounds (68-90 kg), females are slightly lighter with a range of 120 to 190 pounds (55-86 kg). The fleece from a mature ewe will range in weight from four to eight pounds (1.8 to 3.6 kg) with a high yield percentage. The fleeces have a numerical count of 50 to 60 or 23.5 to 31.0 microns with a staple length of three to six inches (7.5-15 cm).
